Hifei controllers are small, light and they work. There is a large range, and I am impressed with them, and I use them myself in all my aircraft. They are microprocessor controlled, low resistance and programmable units. Programming is by a card that is purchased separately (see item listed separately under Speed Controllers) – buy one and you will have it for multiple units to use over and over again. Supply your own connectors and this saves cost as well. The programming is the EASIEST I have ever used – set the Dill switches, plug in the ESC, connect to a motor and a battery and press a button – hey presto, it is done. You can also program with the Tx using beeps in the traditional manner if you wish.

Hifei controllers offer current limiting and thermal protection – an LED flashes if current or heat protection is activated. A safe “power on” feature ensures that your motor will not arm accidentally. If you lose radio contact for more than 3 seconds, the ESC will shut down. If radio contact is re-established, lower the throttle to activate again and restart the motor. Connect your ESC with too much voltage and the ESC also shuts down instead of going up in smoke. Try one and be convinced.

Programming options (default in bold):

1. Hard or soft cut-off
2. Governor mode – auto, low or high
3. Brake type – none, soft or hard
4. Low voltage cut-off: Auto LiPo detect, or manual 2-12 LiPo and some voltage selections
5. Switching rate – 8KHz, 12 KHz or 16 KHz
6. Start-up type: Very soft, soft or fast
7. Timing advance: auto setting, high, middle or low
8. Current limiting: Sensitive, standard, insensitive or disabled. u can see that, if you do not want to activate the brake, you can just accept the default settings and automatic detection features and go and fly!

Hefei low-voltage brushless controllers: These have a resistance type BEC, so can only be used with a limited number of servos. You can just use one in an E-RES with four micro servos. They are better limited to two servos, but spoiler action is limited. If you have big servos, or more than 4, you should use an SBEC type ESC (with switch mode BEC operation that maintains voltage).
20A ESC: Brushless controller capable of 20A constant current and 30A surge. Use with 6-12 NiMH cells or 2-3 LiPo – BEC output maximum 2A for 3-4 micro servos – size 10 x 50 x 26mm – weight 28g with cables.

40A ESC: Brushless controller capable of 40A constant current and 50A surge. Use with 6-10 NiMH cells or 2-3 LiPo – BEC output maximum 2A for 3-4 micro servos – size 13 x 27 x 55mm – weight 35g with cables.
